Rescue Babylon

This is not directed at politicians. This is directed at anyone who loves Miami.

We must not allow the demolition of Babylon Apartments, at 240 SE 14th St. This is our history. It established what we now call Miami architecture. This building was designed by several of the most important architects living today.

It was the first building designed by Arquitectonica, which then included Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk and Andres Duany, along with Bernardo Fort-Brescia and Laurinda Spear.

Today Arquitectonica, led by Fort-Brescia and Spear, is a respected architectural firm that has designed landmark buildings all over the world. They were quite young when they designed this iconic building.

And now they are some of the most famous and well-respected architects in the world — the founders of New Urbanism, exploring how to make space work in the modern world.

The Babylon Apartments should be designated a landmark, refurbished and turned into the icon that it is for the city of Miami. It’s a wonderful design that captured the world’s imagination.
