Re Helen Aguirre Ferre’s Dec. 28 Other Views column, Miami’s magic lies in its entrepreneurial spirit of innovation: Miami will need some magic if it wants to attract technology employees. Gov. Rick Scott and the state Legislature brag about spending per pupil for primary and secondary education, but the facts from the latest U.S. Census show that Florida is in the bottom 10 states with an expenditure of only $8,371 versus the national average of $10,607, and more than $11,000 below New York at $19,552. Plus, former Gov. Jeb Bush wants to push Common Core on students, parents and educators who are not even trained to implement it.
Florida needs some magic and an “Uncommon” Core to catch up with other states and provide well-trained employees.
