Antonio “Shades” Agee, a Detroit graffiti artist, was quoted in National Geographic’s May issue in a story titled Taking Back Detroit. He said: “You can’t save Detroit. You gotta be Detroit.”
In paraphrasing, the lesson for all of us in Florida, “We can’t save the Everglades. We gotta be the Everglades.”
If we were, we would work with all our power to preserve the freshwater flow into the River of Grass. We could “be” the Everglades, the freshwater supply for one-third of all Floridians, and mindful that our bodies are approximately 65 percent water.
