Prison abuse cannot be tolerated

As the Miami Herald has chronicled, Darren Rainey, a mentally ill African-American inmate at Florida Correctional Institution, died two years ago when prison guards locked him into a 180-degree shower for two hours, as punishment for defecating in his cell. Not a single person has been charged in this crime.

Stop Prison Abuse Now (SPAN ), a local coalition advocating for the humane treatment of all prisoners — including the large percentage with mental illness — believes that only an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice can determine why this happened, and help bring an end to such abuse.

Local community leaders have joined our call, along with over 120,000 people across across the nation who have signed our petition at change.org.

Our freedoms and honor are too precious to be degraded by brutality in our prisons.
