Letters to the Editor

Clear editorial

I thank the Miami Herald for the clear and rational June 7 editorial regarding Urban Beach Weekend, “Attack crime, not holiday revelers.”

Every year, the politicians’ rhetoric gets more offensive and racist.

Miami Beach Commissioner Michael Grieco has gone over the top — again — by vowing to make Urban Beach Weekend “a thing of the past.” I’m sure he is well-aware this is not a sanctioned event. It just happens to be a weekend when the visitors and tourists are mostly black. They come here to enjoy the beauty Miami Beach has to offer, just as European tourists do.

In addition, there are some great hip-hop concerts and parties. I know this because I participate with my grown kids and have attended the festivities every year. We have a great time, enjoy the music and meet interesting people from everywhere in the country.

As most are aware, the fact that a criminal shot someone is not uncommon in our city, unfortunately. This is not a Memorial Day-only occurrence.

Perhaps everyone so easily having access to guns might have something to do with the horrendous amount of shootings nationwide.

Thank you again for the positive angle, and the Herald’s wonderful Connect Miami initiative.

Monica Harvey,

Miami Shores
