As an attorney who represents criminal defendants, I am very familiar with the Miami-Dade medical examiner’s office, Dr. Emma Lew, and, of course, the state attorney’s office. I ask Herald writer Julie Brown to keep up her good work exposing the Department of Corrections for its brutality against Darren Rainey. It’s difficult to understand why Lew’s office is taking such an adversarial position and not a position of independence in determining the cause of death.
The manner of death here is not accidental, but certainly appears to be homicide. In light of the delayed reporting, and delayed investigation, it appears this investigation is far from complete. Although Rainey was a prison inmate, his death is a tragedy and should have been fully investigated in a timely manner.
