OUR OPINION: Our picks for Broward School Board

No other issue carries as much urgency as the education of Florida's children. For Broward and Miami-Dade, among the 10 largest districts in the nation, the stakes are high.

District 6

Incumbent School Board member Phyllis C. Hope, 48, faces a tough challenger for District 6, which covers Cooper City, Davie, Lauderhill, Sunrise and Weston: Laurie Rich Levinson, 47, a businesswoman and daughter of state Sen. Nan Rich. Both have been endorsed by the teachers union.

We believe Ms. Hope deserves another term. She has backed additional ethics training for board members, which is crucial after the scandals the board has faced. The first woman and African American to win voter support in this district, Ms. Hope rightly worries about the high dropout rate for minorities and wants more mentoring programs. For Broward School Board, District 6, The Herald recommends PHYLLIS C. HOPE.
