The Herald recommends: Broward County Commission

Ethical lapses and downright criminality have plagued the Broward County Commission recently, with former Commissioner Josephus Eggelletion going to prison on public corruption charges in 2009 and ex-Commissioner Diana Wasserman-Rubin being charged in July with unlawful compensation for voting for grants written by her husband for Southwest Ranches. Finally, under huge community pressure, the commission voted in August to adopt an ethics code.

The other dominant issue is the Great Recession's continuing drag on county coffers. The commission this month voted to hold the line on property taxes and make deeper cuts in services. It was the right choice.

Four commission seats are on the Nov. 2 ballot, but only two races are competitive.

District 6

Veteran Democrat Commissioner Suzanne Gunzburger won a bruising primary against former state lawmaker Steve Geller. She is opposed by no-party candidate Russell Setti.

Ms. Gunzburger, 71, is our choice for this Southeast Broward coastal district. Ms. Gunzburger strongly supported the new ethics code. She votes for environmental protection, improving children's services and transportation needs. She sponsored the use of hybrid buses.

For Broward County Commission, District 6, The Herald recommends SUZANNE GUNZBURGER.
