The Herald recommends

District 111 First elected two years ago to former House Speaker Marco Rubio's old district, state Rep. Erik Fresen has made education a priority, serving as vice chair of the Pre K-12 policy committee and has pushed for higher standards for math and science.

Mr. Fresen, a Republican, is opposed by Democrat Cristina Albright of Coral Gables. Our choice is Mr. Fresen, 34, a land-use consultant who has made strides on the education front in the short time he has been in Tallahassee. He vows to help bring more funding to urban areas, like South Florida, which lost the cost of living differential several years ago.

Mr. Fresen also is looking to reform the state's Medicaid program next year to crack down on fraud, which is sapping millions of dollars from the state budget.

This district covers the disparate needs of working-class sections of Hialeah and parts of central Miami to upscale neighborhoods in Coral Gables and South Miami. For Florida House, District 111, The Miami Herald recommends ERIK FRESEN.
