Florida Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink faces Spring Hill businessman Brian P. Moore in the Democratic gubernatorial primary. As CFO, Ms. Sink made the state financial office more consumer friendly -- educating seniors about elderly fraud, for example. Ms. Sink, who opposes oil drilling off Florida's coast, has introduced an energy plan that, among other things, would require power companies to use clean energy sources to generate a certain amount of electricity.
The plan reflects Ms. Sink's progressive approach. In response to the BP oil spill she asked the GOP-led Legislature in its July special session to streamline the claims process and require BP to respond to claimants in 15 days, just as insurers do after a hurricane. It fell on deaf ears.
For the Aug. 24 Democratic primary for governor The Miami Herald recommends ALEX SINK.
