An 8-year-old boy died, even after his 12-year-old brother’s attempt at CPR, after police said he accidentally shot himself in the chest at home.
The boy was playing with a 9 mm gun in the kitchen of his Port Orange home when it accidentally fired, WESH2 reported.
His 12-year-old brother came running at the sound and tried to save his little brother with CPR, the station reported. He also ran to find a neighbor to call 911. A relative told WESH the 12-year-old learned the technique from his cousin, a firefighter.
Meanwhile, the boy’s great-grandmother was bedridden and helpless to save her great-grandchild. Rescuers took him to the hospital, where he died an hour after the shooting, the TV station reported.

It is unclear where the boy got the gun, if it was secured or who the owner is.
“We’re going to investigate this and try to find out exactly what happened. Right now, our thoughts and our prayers go out to the child and his family,” Port Orange Police Chief Thomas Grimaldi told WESH 2.
