A man learned the hard way that a “Caution! Alligators frequent this area!” sign near a Lakeland canal was there for a reason.

The 21-year-old man lost part of his left arm after jumping into a canal behind a Lakeland apartment complex while hiding from police Wednesday night, Fox 13 reported.

According to reports, the man, Jesse Kinsinger, 21, ran into a wooded area after his mother Rena Kinsinger threatened to call police during an argument.

The younger Kinsinger, who was shot twice during a home-invasion four years ago, suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, the Orlando Sentinel reported. The newspaper also reported that Kinsinger took psychiatric medication.

Jesse Kinsinger’s brother-in-law, Mike Taylor told Fox 13 that he ran because he didn’t want to go to jail.

Police used helicopters and bloodhounds to find him.

Lakeland Police Sgt. Gary Gross told Fox 13 that Jesse Kisinger was found near the lake missing most of his arm.

Taylor turned to GoFundMe to raise $100,000 for “a new working arm” for his brother-in-law.

“Nobody deserves to have this happen to them, and my family and I just don’t have the money to provide this,” Taylor wrote on the account.
