St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach went on the offensive Sunday against a national news report that deficiencies in the hospital’s pediatric cardiac surgery program led to nine infant deaths since it launched in late 2011.
For the first time, St. Mary’s didn’t just deny the report but refuted the figures used in stories last week broadcast by CNN that contend the program’s mortality rate for such specialized programs dwarfs the national average. The hospital said it told the CNN reporter her data was incorrect but the cable news network still broadcast the story last Monday.
