One dead, almost 50 injured in Lima football stadium collapse
RIO DE JANEIRO - One person has died and almost 50 people have been injured after a structure collapsed at a football stadium in the Peruvian capital Lima, the Peruvian Health Ministry said in a statement late Friday.
The ministry said rescue workers took 47 injured people, including a child, to various hospitals.
The public prosecutor's office for economic crime said on the platform X on Saturday that it would investigate the exact circumstances of the person's death. It added that authorities were also evaluating CCTV footage and taking witness statements.
How the collapse occurred on Friday afternoon at the Alejandro Villanueva Stadium was initially unclear.
According to a report by the daily newspaper El Comercio, fans of the club Alianza Lima had gathered in the stadium for a celebration ahead of their team's match against Club Universitario.
