NATO Jets Scrambled to Intercept Russian Recon Plane

Poland dispatched two MiG-29 fighter jets to intercept and escort a Russian Ilyushin Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea on Friday, the country's Operational Command of the Armed Forces said.

Why It Matters

The encounter is the latest in a string of interceptions involving Russian Il-20 surveillance aircraft in recent weeks.

Last week, Norway scrambled F-35s on two consecutive days to identify and shadow Russian Il‑20M aircraft near a NATO exercise area off the country's north coast. The Norwegian Armed Forces noted the flights were likely intended to gather awareness of allied activity during Cold Response military training.

Poland has also deployed fighters and raised air defenses to maximum readiness during large-scale Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine, later confirming that Polish airspace was not violated in those instances.

What To Know

In a post on X on Monday, the Polish Armed Forces said the MiG-29 fighter jets escorted the Russian Il-20 aircraft after it was spotted flying over the Baltic Sea.

“Polish fighter jets intercepted the Il-20 aircraft conducting its ninth reconnaissance mission of the year in international airspace, without a filed flight plan and with its transponder turned off. The aircraft did not violate Polish airspace,” it added.

“Thanks to the high readiness of the on-duty forces, the experience of the pilots, and the efficient operation of the air defense system, the mission was carried out quickly, professionally, and safely.

“[Polish] soldiers every day watch over the safety of Polish skies, carrying out their service with full commitment, and the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland remain in constant readiness to respond to any threats to our airspace.”

Russia has not commented on the incident.

Operation Eastern Sentry

Last year, NATO launched Eastern Sentry, a mission to secure its eastern flank airspace following frequent violations by Russia.

The initiative was launched after roughly 20 drones crossed over into Poland in mid-September. Moscow denied deliberately targeting the country. The first mission was launched that month, with a French Rafale fighter jet and a Polish helicopter deployed to counter a potential threat posed by Russian drones.

Denmark, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom contributed fighter jets and naval vessels at the time.

NATO says of the initiative: “Through Eastern Sentry, Allies are contributing additional capabilities and assets to NATO's deterrence and defence – for instance, more fighter jets, helicopters, transport aircraft, air defence systems, surveillance aircraft and frigates – and improving the coordination of these assets through NATO.

“Furthermore, Eastern Sentry is building on the experience from Baltic Sentry and is incorporating innovative technologies and tactics to address new challenges.”
