A military police officer convicted of sexual misconduct at Guantanámo Bay has been sentenced to two years in prison following a court-martial in Texas.
A military judge convicted Army 1st Sgt. Richard Smith of Orlando, Fla., on charges that he mistreated three females he supervised at the remote U.S. Navy base in southeast Cuba. The alleged misconduct included telling a corporal to be a “cuddle buddy” and having sex with two of the women.
The San Antonio Express-News reports that Smith had pleaded guilty to charges of adultery and lying to a captain about his alleged misdeeds. He was sentenced late Friday.
The trial was held at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland. The base has been enmeshed in its own scandal as more than 30 Air Force instructors have been charged with sexual misconduct against trainees.
