Sen. John McCain, in an interview with Miami Herald columnist Andres Oppenheimer, says that Venezuela is "less and less democratic" under President Hugo Chavez and that he's "not astonished" by allegations that Chavez supports Colombia's leftist FARC guerrillas.
McCain also said a weekend visit by New Mexico Gov. Bill Richarson, a Democrat, to Venezuela to seek Chavez's help in winning the release of three U.S. defense contractors held hostage by the FARC seemed "not helpful."
McCain was in Miami parts of Sunday and Monday for a series of campaign fundraisers and other appearances.
