Puppies found in box were quickly adopted — except for Droopy. Then his luck changed
A puppy found in a box waited as his siblings were adopted — but still needed a home of his own.
Then, after spending weeks in a Virginia animal shelter, the 2-month-old pup got a second chance.
“Our staff was so happy to see Droopy finally find his new family,” Claire LeFew, development and communications manager for the Lynchburg Humane Society, told McClatchy News in an Aug. 19 email. “We’re so excited that he is going to be able to resume normal puppyhood outside of the shelter like his siblings are too.”
The touching adoption came after Droopy and his four siblings — Annette, Odie, Perdita and Scrappy — were found in a park in late July. The pups were spotted in a box together before they landed at the humane society, LeFew wrote in a past email.
“Everyone was scooped up within days except for this little guy,” the shelter wrote Aug. 14 on Facebook. “You may be wondering why, and it’s because of his bowed legs. But all of his siblings had them too, his just happened to be more pronounced.”
The siblings’ legs started to straighten after they got adopted. As Droopy waited his turn, the shelter said he deserved a “loving home whether his legs stay bowed or not.”
“Bowed legs are common in puppies and usually stem from injury, genetics, or malnutrition,” the shelter wrote. “We do not know these puppies’ history or how long they were outside, but we can assume that they were not given proper nutrition/exercise throughout their younger developmental stages.”
Droopy was described in the shelter’s Facebook post as an “incredibly sweet” dog. Within hours of his story hitting social media, the pup gained the attention of three potential adopters.
Now the “last one left of his litter” also gets to start his next chapter, the shelter said.
Lynchburg is a roughly 55-mile drive east from Roanoke.
