2 killed, 5 injured in crashes in South Miami-Dade, Keys

Two people were killed Sunday in separate crashes on South Florida roads.

In Miami-Dade, a crash at Southwest 144th Street and 157th Avenue left one dead and five in the hospital, said police detective Jennifer Capote. At 4:45 a.m., a Toyota Corolla traveling south on 157th collided with a GMC Yukon SUV making a left turn to go west on 144th, she said.

The Yukon was carrying five people and the Corolla just had the driver.

“Upon officers’ arrival, their quick actions resulted in saving the life of one of the victims that was trapped inside the Yukon,” she said. “Unfortunately, one victim from the same vehicle was pronounced deceased on scene.”

The injured were taken to Kendall Regional Hospital’s trauma unit. Police did not release identification.

In Monroe County later Sunday morning, a crash on Big Pine Key Sunday morning resulted in a fatality, the 19th of the year in the Florida Keys.

The crash happened at mile marker 30 of U.S. 1, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The Big Pine Flea Market is located on that stretch of road and is a major draw on weekends.
