A federal judge in Key West has ruled that a U.S. Coast Guardsman stationed in the Keys who is accused of child-porn crimes will remain in custody until his trial.
"The conduct exhibited by this defendant is very disturbing to me," U.S. Magistrate Lurana Snow said at a bail hearing at the Simonton Street courthouse for Drew Alexander Young, 24.
At his initial appearance before Snow on Sept. 4, Young pleaded not guilty to one count each of production of child pornography, distributing child pornography and possession of child pornography.
An Aug. 28 indictment states that in February, Young used his cellphone to film sexual acts of a "prepubescent minor and a minor who had not attained 12 years of age." Young distributed the images on May 10, according to the indictment.

Friday, Coast Guard Special Agent Riley Matsco said Young, who was clad in shackles and wearing a gray and black jail uniform with the words "Monroe County Jail" on it, had used an app called Kik Messenger to find girls.
Specifically, Matsco said, Young solicited sexually explicit photos of 14-year-old and 15-year-old girls. In one message, he reportedly wrote, "I will tie you up." In another, he wrote that since he was 23 at the time, he could have sex with 16-year-olds.
The defense had argued for house arrest with his family in Franklin, Maine. Snow said no. Conviction carries a minimum prison term of 15 years.
Coast Guard officials said Young is in the process of being administratively discharged. Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Gabe Somma said Young's rank is E-3 fireman. He has been in the Coast Guard since April 2011.
