A vehicle hydroplaning on State Road 70 Sunday night ended with five dead in two vehicles and a 6-year-old in critical condition in the hospital, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Jennifer Zuniga, 30, was eastbound on State Road 70 in Desoto in a 2006 Ford F-150 at 7:02 p.m. Sunday when her vehicle began to hydroplane on the wet roadway, according to a release. It rotated and crossed the center line.
A 2013 Volkswagen Passat was westbound on State Road 70 and the driver evasively steered the vehicle into the north shoulder of the road, but the rear of the F-150 still struck the front of the Passat, troopers said.
The driver of the F-150 and all four people in the Passat died in the crash. A 6-year-old in the first vehicle was taken to Tampa General Hospital and is listed in critical condition.
The four in the Passat were not yet identified, pending next-of-kin notification. Three of them were women, ages 29, 24 and 18, and the last was a man, age 25. Only the man was wearing a seatbelt, according to the report. Zuniga also was not wearing a seatbelt.
The crash remains under investigation.
