Police track down owner of $5,500 left on a Broward bus bench

A Broward sheriff’s deputy did some old-fashioned detective work to track down the owner of a bag filled with thousands of dollars left on and around a bus bench in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea

According to CBS4, the bag contained a Wells Fargo bank envelope with more than $5,500 inside — but no name. Later that day, a resident handed over a similar envelope with almost $4,000 inside. That envelope was also nameless, but contained a receipt from a clothing store at Coral Ridge Mall.

Police matched the time on the receipt with surveillance footage of the store and were able to get the image of the man who misplaced the cash, according to CBS4. On Tuesday afternoon, Detective Danny Mursell found him standing on a street corner while sipping a cup of coffee.

The money was found last Thursday — and the owner was located on Tuesday.

The homeless man, who asked that his name not be used, had inherited the money from a relative and accidentally left it on the bench. Police gave him the money after verifying his information with the bank.
