A Miami firefighter shot himself on the Rickenbacker Causeway and died Wednesday morning. Fellow firefighters rushed to the scene and gave their fallen colleague a roadside tribute — huddling in silence, wrapping the body in a flag and leading a procession.
Authorities were summoned around 8 a.m. between the toll booth and the bridge. The Miami Fire Rescue worker was found lying in the sand by the waterfront, dressed in uniform. According to authorities, he was scheduled to work Wednesday.
Before lifting the body into an ambulance, about 25 firefighters huddled for a moment of silence for their colleague. They then draped an American flag over his body.
The firefighters and the ambulance truck formed a small procession on their way to the medical examiner's office.
The firefighter's name has not yet been released.
The investigation slowed down traffic toward Key Biscayne.
