A 68-year-old Clearwater woman died while diving off the Lower Keys, becoming at least the 12th person this year to die while diving or snorkeling in the Keys.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says Elizabeth Hoaglin on Monday was on a boat with friends scuba diving and lobstering in about 10 feet of water at Jewfish Channel, on the bay side of Rockland Key.
Her friends say they saw her struggling on the surface after being underwater for a few minutes. They pulled her into the boat, began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation and called the U.S. Coast Guard help.
The Coast Guard responded and brought Hoaglin to shore, where they were met by paramedics who took her to Lower Keys Medical Center Hospital. She was pronounced dead at the hospital at 1:30 p.m. An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of her death.
