Police kill Palmetto Bay man threatening officers with pickax

A Palmetto Bay man was shot and killed by police late Tuesday after cracking the windows and slashing the tires of six cars, then threatened three officers with a pickax, police said.

Police said when they confronted Ethan James Rincon, 25, at his home at 18300 SW 88th Pl. at 9:30 p.m., the man ran inside and locked the front door. Family members then allowed the Miami-Dade police officers working in Palmetto Bay to enter.

"The individual lunged at the police officers where they were forced to discharge their firearms," Miami-Dade Detective Daniel Ferrin said.

Rincon was pronounced dead at the scene by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue paramedics. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken over the investigation. All three officers were veterans to the force, one with 18 years, one with 20 and the third with 21.

“They wish this would have had a different outcome,” Ferrin said.

In February Rincon was charged with battery and disorderly intoxication. According to his arrest report, Rincon attacked a group of people he didn’t know. The defendant began yelling profanities and racial slurs at the group and was acting belligerent,” an officer wrote in his report.

The case was still pending. His court date was set for April 4.
