UPDATE: WPLG Local 10 reports that the two children, who were reportedly playing in their front yard when they were shot, are expected to make a full recovery.
Two children were airlifted to the West Trauma Center of Kendall Regional Medical Center on Thursday evening, reportedly victims of gunfire in Florida City.
Sometime before the pair's arrival at the hospital, Florida City police officers responded to a report of shots fired. NBC 6 reported that the children, identified as being under 10 years old by the news station, were shot, but the Miami Herald had not confirmed that.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokeswoman Lt. Kirsten Miller said the children appeared to have been driven by family to a local hospital before being transported via helicopter to the West Trauma Center. Their conditions were unknown, and Miller could not confirm the cause of their hospitalization.
Florida City police had not responded to requests for additional information.
Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho expressed sadness on Twitter and offered up prayers to the children and their families.
Devastating to know that yet again children in our community, who should be looking forward to summer break, instead have become victims of a shooting. My prayers are with these children and their families.
