The village of Virginia Gardens held its inaugural 5K on Saturday, May 7, to honor former resident Private Bruce W. Carter, a Marine posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.

Carter earned the nation's highest honor after jumping on a grenade to protect his comrades during the Vietnam War.

Dozens of locals zigzagged about the small town, only one-third of a mile in length, which sits north of Miami International Airport.

Race proceeds will benefit the race sponsor, PFC Bruce W. Carter Young Marines, formerly known as the Young Marines of Miami-Dade County.
