Nearly 100 residents celebrated the Sept. 19 rededication of the Marine Maj. Gen. Roy S. Geiger Memorial in Miami Springs on Saturday.

The memorial was upgraded by volunteers who raised more than $25,000 over a two-year period to add a new concrete base, patio, foliage, lighting and a flagpole. The event’s keynote speaker, Marine Corps Col. David Carbonero, said that Geiger earned a Navy Cross and remains one of the most distinguished aviators in Marine history.

Some of the volunteers who helped with the project include Eric and Ada Richey, Art Jansik, Manny Perez-Vichot, James Watson, Greg and Carol Cates and Irene Priess. The Miami Springs Historical Society, local Boy and Girl Scout troops, Milam’s Market, Alex Electric, Douglass Orr Plumbing and others also helped.
