Miami Springs police: Man with knife sought free service from escort

Neighbors in Miami Springs’ “bird section” called police at 2 a.m. last week to report a “male with a knife running down Raven Avenue.”

After a brief search, officers found Jean Paul Tapanes, 21, hiding in the bushes “breathing heavily and sweating profusely,” according to the police report on the May 6 incident.

Tapanes told police he called an “escort service to have sex with but did not have any money to pay.”

When the 31-year-old escort rejected Tapanes’ pleas to have “sex for free,” the report says, he “put a mask over his face and without warning” grabbed the escort from behind, covered her mouth and “reached in his waistband.”

A male friend of the escort, who was nearby, intervened after he heard “yelling and cursing” near the home in the 500 block of Raven Avenue.

Police found an “8-inch knife in the backyard” and arrested Tapanes on charges of false imprisonment and armed robbery with a weapon.
