Christians around South Florida celebrated Palm Sunday, marking the beginning of Holy Week in the western Christian faith.

Miami Archbishop Thomas Wenski celebrated Palm Sunday Mass on Sunday morning at St. Mary’s Cathedral, 7525 NW Second Ave. Meanwhile, a donkey graced the Palm Sunday service at Coral Gables Congregational Church. As part of the Palm Sunday service, the clergy will bless the palms, traditionally outside of church, so the congregation can enter the church in a processional, carrying their palms. The Palm Sunday service symbolizes Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem on a donkey, where the people greeted him with fronds they had cut down from nearby palm trees. It also symbolizes Christ’s ultimate death on Good Friday and resurrection on Easter Sunday.
