Miami Lakes to hold special meeting Wednesday about charter changes

The Miami Lakes Town Council will hold a special meeting Wednesday to decide when residents will vote whether to accept contentious charter changes the Charter Review Commission will recommend.

The revisions include replacing the elected mayoral seat with a rotating position, and swapping out at-large council seats with ones that reflect geographical locations.

No official changes to the town charter can be made without voter approval.

In an email to town residents from Mayor Michael Pizzi, which he forwarded to the Miami Herald, a vote on the charter changes could happen as soon as May 23 or by July 22 through a mail-in ballot.

With a rotating mayor, council members would vote among themselves to pick a mayor. That person would serve a one-year term, limited to two consecutive years.

Two of the seven council members — Ceasar Mestre and Manny Cid — are at-large representatives, who serve the entire town along with Pizzi.

Nelson Rodriguez, Tim Daubert, Tony Lama and Nelson Hernandez, however, represent specific areas in Miami Lakes each with their own geographical boundaries.

Under the charter changes, one or both of the at-large seats would turn into location-based seats on the council.

Town officials would have to determine the boundaries of the new seat, or seats.

The commission’s proposal to change an at-large seat to one based on location could reduce the town’s options.

“I wouldn’t be able to run,” said Robin Brown-Beamon, a candidate for District 3 along with three others, including the incumbent, Lama.

Brown-Beamon, lives in the 9000 block of Northwest 147 Terrace, which is within the area for District 2.

“I think I should be able to represent the entire community,” Brown-Beamon said.
