Miami Lakes Mayor Michael Pizzi has called for an emergency meeting to be held at 5 p.m. Monday at Miami Lakes Town Hall to discuss funding for the town’s senior programs.
A grant funding these programs was eliminated during the legislative session, according to a media release.
Some of the impacted classes were set to start on Monday.
“About 10 years ago, I formed a partnership with Hialeah High’s Adult Education programs, and they get a grant from the state to provide senior programs in Miami Lakes,” Pizzi said. “Our senior programs have become one of our town’s popular programs.”

These activities include language, computer and exercise classes.
“I am going to try to find private funding so that the seniors programs can continue,” said Pizzi, adding that he will pay $2,000 out of pocket to keep the programs going through the end of the month if outside funding cannot be found.
In the meantime, Pizzi says the town is seeking a long-term solution to the issue.
“It’s just not acceptable to eliminate these senior programs, that enhance quality of life and and have become a staple in the lives of our seniors,” Pizzi said.
