Miami Beach police arrested three suspects Tuesday in the robbery and sexual violation suffered by a woman and a man on South Beach sands June 22.
All three were charged with armed robbery. Xavier Lopez, a 21-year-old from Zephyrhills, also got charged with sexual battery and possession of a controlled substance (two Xanax). The additional charge for Michael Martinez, 20 from South Miami-Dade, was misdemeanor credit card fraud. For 21-year-old Miamian Rafael Monroy, the second charge was dealing in stolen property.
According to the arrest affidavits, Lopez and Monroy put a pistol on the couple walking along the beach parallel with Eighth Street and quickly demanded they lose their clothes. The robbers followed by stripping the woman of all her rings, then stripping the clothes of valuables — cellphones, credit and debit cards, cash, other rings.
At gunpoint, the affidavit said, Lopez began to grope, fondle and violate the woman. When the man jumped between Lopez and the woman, the two thieves raced off to the Martinez-driven car, ditching clothes along the way.
