A veteran Miami Beach police detective died Wednesday morning after “a medical emergency” while on duty at police headquarters, according to Miami Beach police.
The department announced late Wednesday that it was mourning the loss of Det. Larry Marrero, a 28-year veteran of the force.
“Detective Marrero was a consummate professional who always excelled in his assignments,” the department said in a statement. “Revered as a leader among his peers and supervisors alike, Larry will be truly missed.”
Police did not say what the medical emergency was, but said Marrero was rushed to Mount Sinai hospital, where he died. The department announced the officer’s death on its Twitter feed just before 12:40 p.m.
Marrero, who served as a background investigator, previously worked on assignments including marine patrol officer and school resource officer. He had also been on the department’s S.W.A.T. Team for 20 years.
“The Miami Beach Police Department asks for prayers for his immediate and extended family as we begin to cope with this tragic loss of a dear friend and colleague,” the department said.
