Miami Beach police arrested a North Miami Beach teenager Wednesday as one of three suspects in a flurry of July skimming ripoffs that stole $6,882 from ATM users.
Charges of fraudulently possessing identification information and forging credit cards with intent to defraud, seven counts of each, hang over 19-year-old Manuel Vargas.
Vargas had been out of county jail on $6,500 bond on standard battery and domestic battery charges.
Police say a skimming device on the City National Bank ATM in Mount Sinai Medical Center swiped card information from seven people who used that ATM before July 16. But police also say the counterfeit debit cards with the victim’s PIN numbers were used on July 16, 17, and 18 in withdrawals at that ATM caught on the surveillance camera.
Vargas’ arrest report says he admitted to working at Chase Bank, but said he received 10 faux cards and PIN numbers from a friend. He said the two withdrew money at ATMs in Sunny Isles Beach and Miami Beach.
