A Dunbar truck employee making a cash drop-off or pick-up at a Little Havana supermarket opened fired Wednesday after a man tried to rob him, according to Miami police.

The attempted robbery and shooting happened about 1 p.m. outside El Brillante Supermarket, 1164 SW 17th Ave.

According to Miami Police Lt. Freddie Cruz, a Dunbar armored car stopped at El Brilliante market on the corner of 17th and Southwest 12th Street to make a cash pickup.

As a Dunbar guard walked in, a man in an orange shirt and blue pants grabbed his wheelcart. The guard fired a few shots, Cruz said.

“I heard really loud booms,” said Ingrid Sanchez, in her house a block away. “I didn’t know what was going on. I thought it was someone shooting off fireworks in the middle of the day or a car going off. I didn’t know it was gunshots.”

The robber took off without any loot, Cruz said. It was not clear whether he was hit.

Anyone with information is asked to call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477).
