Homestead police officers shot and killed a man Saturday night after he assaulted his ex-girlfriend and pulled a gun on responding officers, police said Sunday.
About 9:20 p.m., the victim and her 14-year-old son were at their home near Southeast First Street and 22nd Avenue when she noticed the shadow of a person, according to the Miami-Dade Police Department, which is investigating the shooting.
She was then attacked by her ex-boyfriend, who used to live at the house but moved out recently, said Miami-Dade Police spokesman Det. Alvaro Zabaleta. Police did not identify the man until his family could be notified of his death.
As the man punched her repeatedly, the woman’s son called police. When officers arrived, the man “armed himself with a firearm,” according to police.

In response, officers shot the man from outside the residence. They then entered the home and shot him again because he still had his gun out. Zabaleta said he did not know how many officers were on the scene or how many shots were fired.
The man was airlifted to Kendall Regional Medical Center and was pornounced dead soon afterward. No officers were injured.
