At least one person died Friday night in a head-on collision involving a van used to transport the elderly, according to Homestead police.
The crash, which ended with a four-door sedan fully engulfed in flames, happened around 7:30 p.m just west of the intersection of Campbell Drive and Speedway Boulevard, Homestead police said. Late Friday, it had not been determined whether anyone other than the driver was in the car.
According to investigators, witnesses said the sedan was westbound on Campbell Drive when the driver suddenly lost control, the car veered into the eastbound lanes and crashed into the transport van. Detectives say speed may have been a factor.
By the time officers and fire rescue crews got there, the sedan was completely ablaze, said Homestead police spokesman Fernando Morales.
The van, which was not transporting anybody at the time, did not catch fire. The van’s driver suffered minor injuries.
“At this time we only know that there is one fatality: the driver,” Morales said. “We are waiting to see if there were more people in the car.”
