Deadly force justified in Hialeah police shooting, chief says

The use of deadly force was justified in the death of a man shot Sunday night by two Hialeah police officers, according to Police Chief Sergio Velázquez.

The two officers, identified by Velázquez as Rick Fernández and Tony Luis, confronted Arturo Jorge Guzmán, 51, after arriving at a home in the 4600 block of East Eighth Lane, following an emergency phone call from Guzman’s girlfriend saying he was threatening her with a weapon.

“What we have been able to investigate internally so far is that the use of weapons was totally justified,” Velázquez said. “All details have been reported to the state attorney’s office.”

Police shot Guzmán and he was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead Monday morning.

Hialeah police had been called to the home at least six times this year over domestic violence incidents, authorities said.

The officers are under administrative license as part of a regular process, Velázquez said.
