Four women injured in Hialeah roll over crash

The driver of Mercedes Benz SUV is in critical condition after a Thursday morning roll over crash in Hialeah.

The accident happened just before 1 a.m. in the 1700 block of W 49th Street. Hialeah police spokesman Detective Carl Zogby said the SUV, with four women inside, was heading east on 49th Street when it was cut off by a silver Chrysler 300 which veered into its lane.

In order to avoid hitting the car the SUV’s driver, identified as 21-year old Diana Penate of Hialeah Gardens, swerved and lost control. The vehicle jumped a curb, slammed into a light pole, rolled over a bus bench and ended up overturned in the parking lot of a Wendy’s restaurant.

Zogby said as the SUV rolled over two of Penate’s passengers, 19-year old Anais Munoz and 22-year old Ludiet Reyes, were thrown from the vehicle. .

Hialeah Fire Captain Cesar Espinosa said a third passenger, 17-year Anay Torres who had been sitting in the front passenger seat, was able to crawl out from underneath the wreckage of the vehicle. She was taken to Palmetto General Hospital where she was listed as stable.

Espinosa said it took fire rescue workers nearly half an hour to cut Penate out the vehicle using the ‘Jaws of Life’.

“The young lady that took 29 minutes to extricate was in critical condition,” said Espinosa.

Penate, Munoz and Reyes were all airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center where they are listed in critical but stable condition.

None of the women were wearing seat belts,

Espinosa said the women’s injuries ranged from abrasions and facial injuries to fractured bones and head injuries.

Munoz’s family said she’s underwent a ten hour surgery to reattach her scalp and will undergo a second surgery on Friday to repair her damaged spinal cord.
