A breast cancer patient who needed a new refrigerator to keep her medications cool approached the Badges of Courage Foundation, a nonprofit that supports breast cancer patients, at last year’s Miami-based PhilanthroFest. By the end of the day, the nonprofit had raised the money for her.
“We started here in Miami with the goal of helping folks understand what the landscape of opportunities to get involved are and to help them connect with an organization that speaks to them directly — not just get involved once, but create a long-lasting relationship with them,” said Estrellita Sibila, the executive director and co-founder of PhilanthroFest, a family-friendly community engagement festival established in 2011.
This year’s event will be April 11 at Museum Park. The “Carnival of Dreams” festival will have family-oriented activities and attraction areas such as a Big Top with theatrical performances and music acts and a “Giving circle,” where children can choose whether to donate their carnival game winnings to a charity of their choice or exchange them for prizes or food.
Nonprofits will be showcased in “community walks” categorized by City & Environment, People & Education, Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Health & Wellness and Arts & Culture.
“It always comes back to what are your personal interests, what are you passionate about,” said Sibila. “It’s about creating the connections in all spheres of influence in the community and presenting them in way that all in Miami can enjoy.”
