‘Foul smell’ leads police to decomposing body inside apartment

A mother’s call and a “foul smell” led Miami police officers on Thursday to find a body in the Serenity on the River Apartments near Marlins Park.

Investigators found the remains of an unidentified person inside an Allapattah apartment building, after a woman called a police non-emergency number and asked for officers to check on her daughter’s well-being.

Police with a search warrant arrived at 6 a.m. Thursday at the apartment complex, 1740 NW N. River Dr., without knowing the daughter’s exact unit number. The stench from the decomposing body led them to her fourth-floor apartment.

Police are still waiting to confirm the identity and cause of death, said Kenia Fallat, a spokeswoman for Miami Police. She said Thursday night that police have categorized the death as “unclassified’’ and will not know more until the Medical Examiner’s Office determines the cause of death.
