Cutler Bay celebrated National Bike to School Day by improving bicycle safety on May 10 at Whispering Pines Elementary.

Students, parents and teachers from the school at 18929 SW 89th Rd. were out on the sidewalks and streets to celebrate the occasion.

The town of Cutler Bay partnered with the school and its PTA for the event. More than 75 students received free bicycle helmets and the town had state-certified bicycle helmet fitters on hand to fit the young cyclists. Attendees also received bicycle safety tips from the Florida Pedestrian and Bicycling Safety Resource Center, The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and BIKE305.

Town police secured the area by enforcing the 15-mph school zone speed limits.

National Bike to School Day was established in 2012 and is celebrated annually each May.
