A long-standing member of the Coral Gables community, who wished to remain anonymous, gave the Coral Gables police department 250 American Express gift cards worth $100 each to be distributed in and around the city during holiday weeks, spokeswoman Maria Rosa Higgins Fallon said.
“Many unsuspecting people were happy to be stopped or pulled over by officers of the Coral Gables police department this week,” Fallon said. “They were not issued a traffic ticket or reprimanded by jaywalking; instead they were pleasantly surprised by a random act of kindness.”
All of the gift cards were to be distributed by Christmas.
“We were able to extend the holiday spirit on behalf of the anonymous Santa,” said Interim Chief of Police Ed Hudak. “The hardest part was to contain the emotion of seeing so many smiles of the elderly and children in need, the victims of crime, and anyone deserving of a random act of kindness during this special time of the year.”

CGPD officers went to work distributing the gift cards at traffic stops and bus stops on Tuesday.
“The officers also went to victims’ homes, families in need and to others facing times of hardship,” Fallon said.
