Coral Gables commission gives preliminary approval to city fees

The Coral Gables commission met on Tuesday, May 26.

The main item

Commissioners passed an ordinance on first reading that will refine and update a myriad of city fees. Some of those fees include parking meters, valet parking and garbage fees.

If passed on second reading on June 16, the new fees will become active in October. Commissioners passed it unanimously, but stressed that the fees mentioned were not permanent, and that they would like more clarification at the next reading.

One specific fee they discussed was raising the hourly parking rate from $1.25 to $1.50 per hour.

“I think we need to look at this more carefully,” Mayor Jim Cason said. “I would love to see valet charges go down so that people will be encouraged to use them and not spend so much time looking for parking on Miracle Mile.”

Other business

▪ Scholarships: Two Coral Gables student residents were awarded the Hopkins Cooper Scholarship, a program established by the city in 1989 to help underprivileged children with their education. The two winners were: Willie Gibson and Britnee Ellison of Coral Gables Senior High School, both 18. Gibson, who who wants to study engineering, will be attending Miami Dade College next semester and plans to transfer out in two years. Ellison, who will be attending Barry University, wants to pursue dentistry.

▪ Mediterranean Village: The Commission deferred an item regarding the Mediterranean Village Project to June 10 at 9 a.m. The Mediterranean Village Project, a mixed-use complex, will rise on the former Old Spanish Village site on Ponce Circle, just a few blocks south of Miracle Mile.

▪ Metal Roofs: Commissioner Vince Lago brought up the subject of metal roofs. He says residents shouldn’t be banned from having them in Coral Gables. He said metal roofs are cost-effective and low-maintenance and hopes the Commission can revisit the topic in the future.
