Oleta River State Park has been around for decades and offers locals the chance to spend the last days of summer the way they were meant to be spent -- outside and with family.
The park has a list of available activities on their site. A few highlights:
Oleta has 10 different biking trails that range in difficulty. For those that count Lance Armstrong among their idols, the park has advanced trails that are curvy and rough in parts, while for the leisure biker (or for one being trailed by young children), there are paved, smooth paths as well.
For families looking for a night away from the Miami metro experience, cabins are available for rent. Equipped with double or bunk beds, and air conditioning, the cabins offer a calm day away from the week’s stress, assuming you remember to leave the cellphone at home.
Cabins cost about $55 per night, and must be reserved for a minimum of two days on weekends and holidays. Reservations can be made online, and there are still plenty of spaces available for Labor Day weekend.
Canoes and kayaks can be rented at a concession stand, and the park is an ideal place to spend the day cruising the river while observing our area's rich flora and fauna. Families can also fish off the Intercoastal Waterway, and the park has its own small pier.
A section of the park is located right on Biscayne Bay. The park's 1,200-foot sandy beach is popular, and it comes without the hassle and parking costs that are a guaranteed part of a trip to many ocean front beaches on Labor Day weekend.
Other events in the Aventura area this weekend:
The Humane Society of Greater Miami is hosting an event this Saturday, Sept. 4, at the Aventura Mall. The organization will be bringing dogs to adopt, pet merchandise, and information on how to get involved with the society.
Village at Gulfstream Park:
Cadillac Ranch, an American-style bar in Gulfstream Park, has live bands every Thursday night from 7-11 p.m., and on Friday-Saturday nights from 7 p.m.-1 a.m. The restaurant is also offering complimentary mechanical bull rides on Thursday nights, and the rides are discounted at $3 on Friday and Saturday nights.
Action-thriller "Machete" will be released on Friday in all major theaters. The film, directed by "Spy Kids" director Robert Rodriguez, tells the story of a Mexican man named Machete (Danny Trejo), an ex-cop who turns into a rebel. Although the movie hasn’t been widely reviewed, it is expected to do well critically and financially, as acclaimed director Quentin Tarantino is taking part in the film.
