A SWAT team was sent to an Aventura weight loss clinic Tuesday afternoon after police received a call about a man with a handgun inside the building. You can read the Miami Herald's report here.
The SWAT team surrounded the Doctor B clinic at 20628 Biscayne Blvd around 3:30 p.m., but did not find the subject inside when they entered the building, according to an Aventura Police press release. TV news reports indicating that the man had barricaded himself inside the clinic were inaccurate.
A female employee of the clinic told police that she let the suspect in the building when he came to the door and asked to use the restroom.
Once she let him in, she heard, "noises coming from the restroom area," and went to see what was going on, the release says. That's when she saw the suspect pull out a revolver, and heard him say, "I am waiting for instructions.”
The woman then got everyone out of the office and went to a nearby travel agency to call for help.
She told police that the suspect is a white male, 20 to 23 years old, weighs 140 to 160 pounds, and was wearing a red and blue stripped shirt. She said that he had a "dirty Harry" like revolver, and "looked crazy," according to Aventura Police spokesperson Chris Goranitis.
Traffic along Biscayne Boulevard and surrounding streets was temporarily re-routed as SWAT conducted a search of the business. The release says that all roads have since been restored to normal operation, and there are currently no traffic delays.
