Two southbound lanes of the Palmetto expressway near NW 36th street were blocked by an overturned boat and trailer on May 5, 2016.

Lunchtime commuters heading south on the Palmetto Expressway spent their break trapped in traffic after an overturned boat and trailer blocked three lanes.

A semi clipped a pickup truck hauling a boat and trailer, spinning the driver out of control and flipping the boat from its perch near Northwest 36th Street in Doral, said Joe Sanchez, Florida Highway Patrol spokesman.

“When you have a semi, a pickup truck and flipped boat, you have all the ingredients for a nightmare of a traffic jam on the Palmetto,” Sanchez said.

The accident, which happened about 12:30 p.m., shut down three right lanes for hours as crews cleaned up the mess and troopers investigated.

Drivers at a standstill pulled out cellphones and snapped photos of the wreck. The lanes of creeping traffic grew even slower close to the scene of the accident, where they were forced to merge.

By 3:30 p.m., the boat had been loaded on a flatbed truck, but traffic was still being diverted.
