Police shoot man wielding machete in Southwest Miami-Dade

A Miami-Dade police officer shot a 56-year-old man Monday night after police say he lunged at the officer with a machete outside a home off Bird Road.

Police did not identify the man but said the officers were responding to a domestic dispute between two brothers. When they arrived at about 6:30 p.m., the brothers were “engaged in a violent dispute,’’ Miami-Dade Police Acting Director Juan Perez said.

“The officer told him to put down the machete, but the subject refused and actually lunged at the officer, forcing her to fire,’’ Perez said.

The home at 8535 SW 41st Ter. was surrounded by police cars. Police escorted a woman who identified herself as the sister of the men; she was too distraught to talk.

The man was taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center, where he was in critical condition on Monday night, police said.
