Police warn Miami drivers: Prepare for protests to snarl traffic

CBS4 Miami

The Miami Beach Police Department is warning drivers to be prepared for delays due to protest.

According to the Facebook page of #ShutItDown #Ferguson2Miami, protesters are preparing to line the streets of downtown Miami starting at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

The demonstration will be in protest of the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson Missouri, Eric Garner in New York and Israel “Reefa” Hernandez in Miami Beach – who all died at the hands of police officers.

A week ago, protesters managed to shut down I-195 in Miami-Dade County in both directions for a brief time at night.

The protests halted traffic during Art Basel. For some drivers, once they were stuck in traffic there was no alternate route for escape.

MBPD said drivers, especially though using the MacArthur Causeway, should leave to their destination early or find alternative routes between 4 and 9 p.m.
